TEXAN: The students were named the MVP of recycling
returning 70 million pieces of materials
in the Multi-purpose Recycling Centers
in the context of Major Educational Recycling Competitions!
More than 720 school classes and thousands of students sent a strong message of sustainability throughout the country, while the first of them will travel free of charge to Europe and Greece
With unprecedented success, the Major Educational Recycling Competitions organized by TEXAN SA, under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports, were completed. In total, more than 720 school classes from Attica, Crete, Peloponnese and Chalkida participated actively, recycling 69,856,970 recyclable materials. An impressive number that captures the dedication of the new generation to sustainability and environmental responsibility, declaring students as Most Valuable Protectors – MVP of recycling.
In particular:
• In 42 municipalities of the Region of Attica, with the cooperation of the Regional Association of Attica Municipalities, 26,779,051 pieces of materials from 254 school classes were recycled,
• in 12 municipalities of Crete, in cooperation with the Unified Waste Management Association of Crete, 8,126,795 pieces of materials from 180 school classes were recycled,
• in 18 municipalities of Peloponnese, in cooperation with the Peloponnese Solid Waste Management Body (FODSA) of Peloponnese, 31,056,158 pieces of materials from 195 school classes were recycled,
• in Chalkida, in cooperation with the Municipality of Chalkida, 3,894,966 pieces of materials from 91 school classes were recycled.
The winning school classes that emerged as MVP
The school classes that excelled in the corresponding Major Educational Recycling Competitions and emerged as the MVP school classes are the following:
• In Attica, the 5th Elementary School of Korydallos (Class F1) reached the top recycling 1,526,908 pieces of materials, followed by the 2nd Elementary School of Aspropyrgos (C1) with 1,035,634 pieces of materials. The 5th Lower Secondary School of Chaidari (B4) with 931,637 pieces of materials ranked third.
• In Crete, the winning school was the 1st Upper Secondary School of Heraklion (Class A3) which recycled 526,515 pieces of materials, followed by the Lower Secondary School of Limenas Hersonissou (G3) with 387,585 pieces of materials and the 48th Elementary School of Heraklion (E1) with 353,069 pieces of materials.
• In the Peloponnese, the 2nd Upper Secondary School of Argos (Class B3) ranked first with 2,042,697 pieces of materials, followed by the 1st Vocational Upper-Secondary School (EPAL) of Kalamata (C Nursing) with 1,859,369 pieces of packaging material and the 1st Upper Secondary School of Argos (C4) with 1,854,702 pieces of materials.
• In the Municipality of Chalkida, the first place was occupied by the General Upper Secondary School of Drosia (Class A1) with 250,661 pieces of materials, with the General Upper Secondary School of Kanithou (B3) following with 241,949 pieces of materials and the 5th Model High School of Chalkida (B1) occupies the third place with 235,588 pieces of materials.
Following the conclusion of the Competitions, the President of TEXAN, Mr. Apostolos Mourgos stated the following: “This year’s participation exceeded all expectations. Children have demonstrated that ecological awareness translates into action when supported by a system, education, and collective effort. At TEXAN, we continue to invest in the cultivation of the new generation’s environmental awareness through innovative high-tech recycling systems. Change can be initiated by schools and local communities. Together with Giannis Antetokounmpo –Most Valuable Protector (MVP) & TEXAN Recycling Ambassador in Greece, we continue to promote environmental awareness throughout the country. Because in Recycling we are all a team. We are TEXAN!”
TEXAN’s Multi-purpose Recycling Centers, with an expanded network of over 500 outlets nationwide, served as the fundamental mechanism behind the success of the competitions.
Students gained first-hand experience of the value of recycling through ‘sorting at source’ and discovered how technology can be connected to sustainable development.
The Major Educational Recycling Competitions are another important initiative in the context of the wider CSR and environmental awareness actions by TEXAN. These competitions represent the continuation of an already successful trajectory that actively involves both the student body and local communities. The aim is to cultivate an ecological awareness of the new generation and to develop a spirit of cooperation, for a common goal: environmental protection.
The prizes for the winning students are the following:
• 1st prize: A five (5)-day trip for all students of the school class with the highest participation to any city in Europe of their preference.
• 2nd prize: A five (5)-day trip for all students of the school class with the second highest participation to any city in Greece of their preference.
• 3rd prize: Smartwatches for all students of the class with the third highest participation.
Alternative prizes, in accordance with the Competition’s terms, if the first two places were taken by Elementary Schools or Kindergartens, are the following:
• Prize 1: One (1) Electric Bicycle for all students of the school class, provided that the first (1st) class to collect the largest number of materials belongs to a kindergarten or an elementary school
• Prize 2: One (1) bicycle, for all students of the school class, if the first (1st) school class that will collect the largest number of materials is a kindergarten or an elementary school (1st, 2nd,3rd, 4th grade).
Due to the extremely large participation of students in the Major Educational Recycling Competitions of Primary and Secondary Schools, it was decided that prizes would be awarded to the winning school class from each Municipality which is one (1) smartwatch for all students of the school class. The municipalities to which the 3 winning classes belong are excluded.
