In 2007, the popular artist Michalis Hadzigiannis was proclaimed by TEXAN in co-operation with the Municipality of Athens and Love Radio 97,5 as "a Supporter of the Recycling Concept". 
 
 

With exceptional participation levels 


the "Great Recycling Celebration of the Municipality of Athens"


was held in Syntagma Square


The culminating event of the "Great Recycling Celebration of the Municipality of Athens" was held on Sunday 6 April 2008 in Syntagma Square at 3 p.m., with the presentation of the Integrated Rewarding Recycling Program.

During the event, the major prizes were awarded to the school classrooms with the highest participation in the "Major Recycling Competition".
The event’s highlights were the unique musical moments with special guests, such as Michalis Hadzigiannis, Glykeria and Despoina Olympiou. Τhis event was attended by thousands of Athenians.

185.426 citizens, mostly school students from the Municipality of Athens, visited and recycled 748.269 packages during the "Great Recycling Celebration of the Municipality of Athens".

In particular, the following were recovered:
 

  • 375.146 plastic packages or 18.757,30 kg of plastic
  • 216.983 aluminum packages or 3.254,75 kg of aluminum
  • 93.568 tinplate packages or 5.146,24 kg of tinplate
  • 62.572 glass packages or 17.833,02 kg of glass

It should be noted that the recycling of these packaging during the Great Celebration yielded the following excellent environmental benefits:
 
no more than 13.700 kg of greenhouse gases will be released into the atmosphere
almost 14.800 kg of bauxite will not be extracted
more than 2.400 kg of oil have been saved
electricity was saved to listen to the radio for 867.932 hours or to watch tv for 650.949 hours
People from all age groups attended the Environmental Education Workshop, where they were trained on the recycling process and environmental benefits, and also participated in the Recycling Game, with questions and quizzes on recycling.
  

The major prizes of the “Big Recycling Competition” were awarded to the 3 school classes with the highest participation level. In particular:

  • The B1 classroom of the 2nd Athens Vocational Upper Secondary School, collected 11.325 participation vouchers and won the trip to France to visit and tour the largest plastic recycling plant in Europe, while visiting Euro Disney and the city of Paris. This prize is for ALL classroom pupils
  • The A2 school classroom of the 28th General Upper Secondary School of Athens, collected 9.505 participation vouchers and won game consoles for All classroom pupils 
  • The C2 school classroom of the 52nd General Upper Secondary School of Athens, collected 9.502 participation vouchers and won bikes for All classroom pupils with the third largest participation
